Dr. Bumgarner is well known for his teaching efforts both locally and internationally. At the University of Washington, Dr. Bumgarner’s primary teaching responsibilities consist of an annual course "Conjoint 546 - Survey of Genome Technologies". This graduate level course is designed to expose students to a variety of technologies including methods for DNA sequencing, expression analysis, genotyping and proteomics. Each year since 2000, 20-27 students have taken this very popular course. In addition, the UW Center for Expression Arrays (CEA) offers regular training courses to explain both expression array technology and tools and methods for data analysis. To date, more than 200 researchers at the UW and other local institutions have received training via the CEA.
Each year, Dr. Bumgarner also participates in several training courses offered either in the US or at international locations. For example, in 2004, Dr. Bumgarner taught data analysis workshops at the
South African National Bioinformatics Institute, an
EMBO sponsored course in Heidelberg, and a FEBs sponsored course in Prague. In 2005, Dr. Bumgarner is currently scheduled to teach workshops at the
Feb. 2005 AAAS meeting in Washington DC, at a
June 2005 EMBO course in Heidelberg and at the
Sept 2005 MGED Meeting in Bergen Norway.
In addition to courses and workshops, Dr. Bumgarner takes an active role in public education activities and regularly speaks to outside groups. For example in March of 2005, he will give a public lecture entitled "Biotechnology: Myths and Realities" at the Tacoma public library and he has taught workshops entitled
"Understanding Biotechnology" at each of the
Biotechnology Industry Organization Meetings in the past 4 years.
